Ten Years After: The Warhol Factory
February 7, 1997

Billy Name

Although he is best known as Warhol's Factory photographer, Billy Name's formative years as an artist were spent in the underground theater.

Starting in 1960, he became active in lighting design at such avant-garde venues as the New York Poets' Theater, the Living Theater, and Judson Memorial Church. He met Warhol in 1963. From 1964-70, he served as in-house photographer, lighting and set designer, book designer and editor, and Superstar in a few of Warhol's films, including Haircut, Couch, and Lupe. He was responsible for the famous silvering of the original Factory's interior, and for documenting life in Warhol's circle through photography.

In the 1970s, Name moved to San Francisco and developed his concrete poetry canon. He returned to New York in 1977, where he remains active as a photographer, concrete poet, and conceptual sculptor. His photography has appeared in virtually all publications devoted to Warhol, and has been exhibited in the US, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The first monograph on his photography (Debra Miller, Billy Name: Stills from the Warhol Films) was published in 1994.
