David Hatchett - New York, NY
"My
art is a pop art, with modernist roots. Using materials and
methods
from the construction industry, I join, wrap, skin, screw, rivet, cut
and
pound to create a disorienting and re-orienting experience of the most
commonplace
and casual aspects of my environment. The emphasis is on the
nature
of perception. A shopping cart, first wrapped in plywood, then
flexible
electrical conduit, then skinned in shiny, sheet aluminum, is topped
with
a transparent telephone, for convenience. A
person can walk the cart around the house, like a homeless person
caught
in a sci-fi nightmare, and the phone is ready to make that call
anytime,
anywhere, as long as the cord finds its jack."
