"I
have discovered something powerful, real, in my reinvention of the
ancient
cylindrical seal into the image-roller brush! It is as if I have
reconnected
with 30,000 years of art/artifact making; from the neolithic batons
found
in the glorious caves of Europe, to the ubiquitous paint roller brushes
found
in Janovic Plaza.
I take, from the daily newspapers, images of people that I find interesting; then proportionalize them to the one revolution of the common roller size. I then carve into the roller itself, freeing the image from the blank cylindrical surface. Each carved roller image imparts its own fractal signature when drawn across the surface, providing infinite visual variation, and, I hope, enjoyment to the viewer." Jon Singer |
